The formation of the Bojana river delta is quite recent. In the late ‘700 the river went straight to the sea with an estuary. Probably starting before the 20th Century, the Delta had a general progradation given by an increase of river solid transport, both connected to a post glacial climate change effect and to the Drin connection to the Bojana river.
In the last decades, due to decrease of solid river transport connected to the constructions of dams on the Drin basin, the Bojana Delta faced a diffuse erosion phenomenon. It is estimated that in the last 30 years about 300 m of emerged beach in Ada Bojana delta is lost.
The original objective was to define a set of actions to revitalize the Ada Bojana coastal area by reviewing previous Studies and analysing the effects of the implemented short-term project (sandbag groin). However examining the regional framework for Ada Bojana area and the related coastal dynamics, together with the effective reduced sediments arriving at the Delta and the effects of global warming show an unlikeliness that the conservation and revitalization of Ada Bojana area can be guaranteed beyond a period 35 years. To maximalise the economic and environmental potentials of Ada Bojana for an extended period a support for the decision making process of the protection and management of the Ada Bojana coastal stretch was given. Among the most notable measures are:
- Setting up a common ground and Vision for the future of the area
- Setting up an internal coordination process of all involved stakeholders
- Agreement with Albanian authorities to set actions for the restoration of river solid transport of Bojana-Drin system
- Monitoring and partial removal of the sandbags groin
- Beach management and maintenance
- Realization of winter protection sand embankments
- River solid transport monitoring activity on the Bojana
- Avoid the construction of rigid or semi-rigid structures
- Overall re-design of the area of the resort village
